The microchip crisis delays the wait for an electrified vehicle to seven months, according to Sumauto

The crisis of the ‘chips’, together with the war in Ukraine and the problems in the production chains, have lengthened the delivery times of electrified vehicles in the five main European markets (Germany, Spain, France , Italy and the United Kingdom), according to Kantar promoCAR data provided to Sumauto.

In January of last year, the wait was less than three months (84 days), rising to five months in January of this year (149 days) and reaching the current 205 days.

On their side, the wait for combustion vehicles is more than five months on average (163 days), one month more than at the beginning of the year, when it was 133 days. At the beginning of 2021, the wait stood at just over two months (71 days).

The difference in the delay of both technologies is due to the fact that, to the problems in the production of the vehicles, it is added that the manufacturers do not have the same capacity to produce an electrified one than a combustion one, despite the high demand for the first.

All this has led to the transfer of demand to the second-hand market, which has meant a decrease in the ‘stock’ of second-hand vehicles of nearly 40% in the last year.

Thus, according to Autobiz’s Green Car Monitor VO data for Sumauto, if in mid-2021, drivers could choose between 390,084 combustion vehicles and 33,531 electrified vehicles on offer, now that figure has been reduced to 260,390 and 21,801 cars, respectively.
