Insecurity is the main concern of Mexicans. 45% of those surveyed by the consulting firm Enkoll in a study carried out for EL PAIS and W Radio indicate it as their main concern. The choice is resounding despite the gloomy economic horizon and the inflation that plagues millions of people, since only 35% place financial turmoil at the top of the list of most serious problems. Corruption, whose combat is one of the battle horses of the Government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is even further away and worries 20% of voters. The survey was carried out between August 16 and 19, days after drug blockades in Jalisco, Guanajuato and Baja California put entire populations in check amid shootings and burning of vehicles and businesses.

The opposition often criticizes the government for having adopted a strategy against organized crime more focused on prevention than on response, while the president flatly denies having opened his hand. In any case, the violence does not stop, driven by a new war between cartels. And the population is divided, according to the survey data. If 50% maintain that Lopez Obrador is doing what is necessary to avoid episodes such as drug blockades, 47% maintain the opposite. In addition, state governors are perceived as the main responsible for preventing violent acts by 28% of the population, above the president.

In July, one of the most wanted capos and founder of the former Guadalajara cartel, Rafael Caro Quintero, was arrested by the Mexican authorities. From the moment of his arrest, the United States, which indirectly participated in the operation that led to his capture through its anti-drug agency, the DEA, requested the drug trafficker’s extradition. The procedure has not yet been finalized, stuck in a ma of judicial appeals, but the case is emblematic, it is the tip of the iceberg of the collaboration between Mexico and Washington in matters of security.

The debate on cooperation with the neighboring country is not new and the two Administrations launched a new security program a year ago, baptized the Bicentennial Understanding. However, a clear balance of results does not yet exist or has not been disclosed. In this context, Mexican voters are also divided on the effectiveness of binational collaboration. 48% believe that it is necessary to achieve greater cooperation with the Joe Biden government, but 47% do not see it as necessary.
