Video | The most extreme ads of the US election campaign

The fight for a position in the US government in next Tuesday’s elections has unleashed the creativity of the Republican candidates from the different states that are trying to come to power. Interviews on television and banners in the streets are no longer enough, so these applicants have chosen to show their proposals on television and networks through promotional videos.

As can be seen in the video that accompanies this news, weapons, violence and religion have become the main themes of these messages. In several of them, such as Jim Wyman or Blake Masters, both candidates for Arizona, they defend the right to arms. So does Jerone Davison, at the same time that he identifies the Ku Kux Klan with the Democrats: “Democrats like to say that no one needs an air rifle to defend themselves, that no one could need all 30 rounds. But when this rifle is the only thing standing between your family and a dozen angry Democrats in Klan hoods, they might need that semi-automatic. And 30 rounds.”

Miguel Jimenez, Chief Correspondent of EL PAIS in the United States, also analyzes the violent tendency of these ads. “One of the things that draws the most attention is the amount of negative publicity that there is against political rivals. Ads are often focused on exposing their weaknesses”, says Jimenez. There are also attacks against the press, as is the case of the campaign of James David Vance, who defends the border wall of former President Donald Trump and accuses the media of calling them racists for it.

Religion and family also appear in these videos. Linda Paulson, an 80-year-old woman from Utah, is running on her conservative side. Her campaign, however, is not so. She has opted for singing to sell her candidacy.
