VIDEO : Nocomment | Croatia deploys the Army to help in heavy flooding

Heavy rains in recent days have caused some rivers to overflow, flooding homes, roads and public buildings in some cities.

Classes in the city of Obrovac were canceled after water entered schools…

Some parts of the city lost electricity, and water covered the center of Obrovac. In nearby Gracac, a dozen people had to move to higher floors or evacuate their homes to avoid floodwaters.

Some 300 army personnel stepped in to help people in need and bolster flood defenses, according to authorities. Emergency crews said they were bringing food to people trapped in their homes.

Photos from the scene showed people using small boats to get around and water running over sandbags placed to prevent flooding. A rescuer could be seen carrying a small dog that he saved from floodwaters.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic declared that the government would provide all necessary funding and assistance.

The authorities of Hrvatska Kostajnica, a city on the border with Bosnia, declared a state of emergency after the spectacular flooding of the Una river overnight. Flooding was also reported downstream in northwestern Bosnia.

Croatian forecasters said more rain is expected in the coming days.
