Venezuela demands that the United Kingdom cease the “appropriation” of gold and criticizes its endorsement of the opposition Assembly

The Government of Venezuela has reproached the United Kingdom for continuing to recognize the National Assembly elected at the end of 2015 — controlled by the opposition — as legitimate and has urged it to take steps to overcome the “obstacles” in the bilateral relationship, among them the end of the “misappropriation” of gold reserves in the hands of the Bank of England.

On Thursday, the government of Rishi Sunak reaffirmed its support for the Venezuelan opposition Assembly, which is no longer headed by Juan Guaido. The Executive of Nicolas Maduro has responded in a statement to “categorically” reject the British position.

“It represents a flagrant interference in matters of exclusive competence of the Venezuelan State, with the aim of affecting the true spaces for dialogue convened by President Nicolas Maduro,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lamented in a note.

Caracas expects a “constructive role” from London, which goes through “roads of understanding” that, however, seem far away today. One of the main open fronts revolves around legal disputes over control of Venezuelan gold held by the United Kingdom, vetoed by Chavismo.

“The Government of Venezuela will not give up in the defense of its sovereignty and International Law,” the Ministry has insisted.
