The Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, has accepted the request of the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, for Venezuela to be part of the guarantor countries in the peace process that Bogota is about to open with the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and that It will take place in Havana, Cuba.

“A letter arrived from President Gustavo Petro for Venezuela to agree to become the guarantor of the peace negotiations with the ELN guerrillas. I told him that once again, as the commander did, Venezuela will fulfill this commitment,” said the Venezuelan president in a statement collected by Globovision.

Maduro has insisted that, on behalf of the Venezuelan people, Venezuela will participate in the peace process, since he considers that “the security and stability of Colombia is the peace of the entire region.”

“In that I carry the voice of all the people of Venezuela, of the 6,200,000 Colombians who live in Venezuela (…) We will go there and for that we will commit all our efforts, all our work,” he stressed.

A few hours earlier, the Colombian president published a letter in which he urged his Venezuelan counterpart to continue with the agenda and protocols signed in 2016 between said guerrilla and the then government of Juan Manuel Santos.

One of these procedures contemplates the return to Colombia of the ELN delegation that is in Cuba, passing through Venezuela. This, in order to “hold a prompt meeting in Venezuela in order to specify the procedure for the reestablishment of the talks table,” as reported by ‘El Tiempo’.

“I respectfully and formally submit the request for your invaluable contribution to the fulfillment by the Colombian State of the commitments acquired in the construction of peace for our country,” reads the letter issued by Petro.

The Colombian president has reminded his counterpart that both the Government and the ELN have reached an agreement to give “full and safe application” to the protocol signed in 2016, which is why he has called on Venezuela to participate again as guarantor.

“For this reason, we request your activation as a guarantor country, your authorization and cooperation in the peace process that we are restarting. The Government and people of Venezuela have always offered their effective support for the definitive overcoming of the Colombian armed conflict,” concludes the statement. missive.
