US Says No Indications of Russian Nuclear Weapons Deployment in Belarus

The United States says there are no indications that Russia has transferred nuclear weapons to neighboring Belarus, despite President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of his intention to deploy them there.

The Russian president’s statement during an interview over the weekend has drawn swift condemnation from NATO, which has called it “dangerous and irresponsible” rhetoric.

The head of the foreign policy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, has warned Belarus about the danger of harboring Russian nuclear weapons on its territory and assured that the community bloc would be prepared to apply new sanctions.

“Belarus accepting Russian nuclear weapons would be an irresponsible escalation and a threat to European security. Belarus can still prevent it, it is its choice. The EU is prepared to respond with more sanctions,” Borrell wrote on his Twitter account.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is a close ally of Putin and last year allowed his country to serve as a base for sending Russian troops to Ukraine.

Russia claims that the plan to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus is in response to growing Western military support for Ukraine. And he points out that Washington has nuclear weapons in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

Ukraine, for its part, has demanded an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
