The United States Department of Justice has filed formal charges on Monday against two alleged Chinese spies accused of trying to interfere in the federal investigation opened in the United States against the Chinese company Huawei.

These are “plots of malign influence and alleged criminal activity of a nation-state in the United States” attributed to Gouchun He and Zheng Wang. The statement of charges does not name Huawei, but investigative sources cited by CNN have confirmed what about this company.

He and Wang built a personal relationship with a law enforcement agent implicated in the case in early 2017 to the point that they believed he had been recruited as an agent for China, even though he was actually a “double agent” supervised by the FBI. It is not known if the two suspects are in custody.

At the beginning of the investigation, they asked for information about a witness, about evidence and about the charges that could be brought against Huawei. In exchange, the agent received thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspects continued to make payments for information worth thousands of dollars in Bitcoin as late as last week. In exchange, they asked their “mole” to even record the prosecutors during the strategy meetings. A forged secret document prepared by the authorities was given to the spies for $41,000.
