US demands Serbia and Kosovo end tensions

The prime minister of Kosovo accuses the Serbian government of orchestrating the demonstrations

Washington calls on Kosovo and Serbia to take action to end the tension.

US Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer held phone calls with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The US official asked the Serbian leader to withdraw the forces located on the border and the Kosovar leader to remove the police from public buildings.

Hundreds of Serbs protested this Friday for the fifth consecutive day in front of the Town Halls of various towns in the north of the country Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok. They demand the withdrawal of the mayors of the Albanian majority and the Kosovar special police from the area; as well as the soldiers of the NATO peacekeeping forces.

The current mayors were elected in April in those three towns and in Mitrovica in a process boycotted by the Serbs and in which only 3% of the census participated.

France and Germany demand the repetition “without delay” of the municipal elections in those four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, where the Serbs are in the majority.

Pristina accuses Belgrade of orchestrating the protests

The prime minister of Kosovo accused Belgrade of orchestrating the clashes that broke out after the municipal elections boycotted by the Serbs in the north of Kosovo and that left around thirty NATO soldiers injured.

Kurti stated that the escalations that occurred on May 29 were “planned, well organized and had a perpetrator. The perpetrator is the official Belgrade.”
