US calls on EU to maintain firm stance on Russia until war in Ukraine ceases

Antony Blinken and Ursula von der Leyen

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday called on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the EU to maintain a firm response to Russia until President Vladimir #Putin stops the war and withdraws troops from #Ukraine.

“Tragically, the situation is not going to end soon, so we have to sustain the efforts and work on them (*) until the war ends, Russian troops leave and Ukrainian citizens regain their sovereignty,” she said in remarks after participating in the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

The meeting served to jointly monitor the evolution of the Ukrainian crisis. In this sense, Blinken has valued the unity and effectiveness of the EU-27 in the face of the Russian challenge and has claimed that the alliance between Washington and Brussels is “making a difference” in the response to Putin.

“Things that we did not think were possible are now a reality, because this Union is strong, united and is acting and we are grateful to have this relationship because it is making a difference,” said the U.S. diplomat.

The Russian invasion puts the transatlantic relationship to the test, said Blinken, who claimed the “investment” of Joe Biden’s Administration in the link with Europe, for which the bet is “responding”.

For his part, Von der Leyen assured that the EU must be prepared for the conflict to drag on and stressed that the bloc will be ready to adopt “more severe measures if Putin does not stop and reverse the war he has provoked”.
