Around 4,100 civilians have been killed since the start of the war in Ukraine, triggered on February 24 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to data provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The agency said it has so far confirmed 4,974 civilians killed — 1,540 men, 1,014 women, 93 girls and 100 boys, as well as 69 minors and 1,258 adults whose sex is unknown — and 4,826 wounded — 971 men, 653 women, 112 girls, 137 boys and 166 minors and 2,787 adults whose sex is unknown

It also said that in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, located in the Donbas region (east), 5,037 civilian casualties have been recorded – 2,307 dead and 2,730 wounded – while in areas controlled by the Ukrainian government, 4,332 casualties have been documented – 2,171 dead and 2,161 wounded.

On the other hand, in territories controlled by “Russian-affiliated armed groups– 705 casualties have been confirmed—136 killed and 569 wounded–, while in other regions of Ukraine that were under government control when the casualties were recorded this figure rises to 3,863—17,67 killed and 2,096 wounded

“Most of the recorded civilian casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including heavy artillery and multiple rocket launcher attacks, as well as missiles and shelling,” the agency has said, adding that it believes the actual number of casualties “is considerably higher.”

In this regard, it has emphasized that “the receipt of information from some locations where there are intense hostilities has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration”, which affects, among other areas, Mariupol, Izium and Popasna, “where there are reports of numerous civilian casualties”.
