UK to send long-range Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine

It marks an important step in sending aid to Ukraine from the West. The Kremlin has responded that the decision will have its military response on the ground.

The British Government opens a new door regarding Western aid to Ukraine. The one to deliver long-range missiles. After listing the consequences of the Russian invasion for the Ukrainian people and for the whole of Europe, Defense Minister Ben Wallace announced this Thursday in the House of Commons:

Ukraine’s right to defend itself

“Today I can confirm that the UK is donating Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine. The Storm Shadow has conventional-only and long-range precision strike capability. Donating these weapon systems gives Ukraine a greater opportunity to fend off continued brutality of Russia, especially deliberate attack on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, which is contrary to international law. Ukraine has the right to be able to defend itself against this.”

A Russian military response

The Kremlin considers this decision an escalation, which according to President Putin’s spokesman Dimitri Peskov, will have an adequate military response.

“We have a very negative attitude. It will require a pertinent response from our military, who will take the necessary decisions in this context from the military point of view”.

Jointly developed by the UK and France, the Storm Shadow has a range of 250 kilometres. They are hardly detectable and they can do a lot of damage to the Russian rear. However, Wallace has stressed that they are not in the same league as Russian hypersonic and cruise missiles that exceed 2,000 kilometers.
