This weekend the violence has left a tragic episode in Oaxaca. Two siblings, a girl and a boy, aged nine and seven, were found lifeless on the side of a road, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, in the State of Oaxaca, on Saturday. The State Prosecutor’s Office had reported the arrest of the children’s father due to his alleged relationship with what happened. According to local media and residents of the region, the two minors used to sell fried foods and sweets on the El Espinal highway, and also in the streets of the Fidel Pena neighborhood, in the municipality of Juchitan de Zaragoza, where they were from.
Reports from local authorities indicated that, although the bodies of the girl and boy did not show gunshot wounds, they did show signs of suffocation. The father has been made available to the Public Ministry. The governor of the entity, Salomon Jara Cruz, condemned, through his social networks, the death of minors and promised to do everything possible to clarify the case: “I reiterate: defend life, especially that of our girls and children, it is the highest mission of our government and we will always work to fulfill it”.
This Sunday, amid cries of “justice” and traditional music, friends, relatives and neighbors of the brothers buried the minors and asked that the case be investigated. “Where are the human rights of children? Where is the municipal president? Where is the governor?”, a man is heard saying, during the burial, in a video on social networks.
Juchitan de Zaragoza, where the children came from, is the third most populous municipality in Oaxaca. Information from the Government of Mexico, corresponding to the year 2020, also indicates that more than half of the population of Fidel Pena, the city where they lived, lives in poverty.
Violence in Oaxaca, as in various states of Mexico, is intensifying and merciless with the most vulnerable. On May 3, 2022, three girls aged eight, five and two years old, as well as a 10-month-old baby, were murdered in a community in Juchitan, presumably by her mother, who suffered domestic violence caused by her husband. her.
In the first 11 months of 2022, 1,116 intentional murders of children and adolescents were committed in Mexico, an increase of 3% compared to the previous year, according to the Network for the Rights of Children in Mexico (Redim).
