Twitter deletes account of Republican U.S. Representative

Twitter on Sunday deleted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s personal account, alleging that the Georgia Republican committed multiple violations of the social network’s policy against misinformation about COVID-19, the company said in a statement.

The Republican politician’s account was permanently deleted under the strikes system Twitter launched in March, which uses artificial intelligence to identify posts about the coronavirus that are misleading enough to cause harm to people.

Under the strikes system, Twitter blocks an account for 12 hours if the user commits two or three infractions. Four strikes triggers a one-week suspension and with five or more someone’s account can be permanently removed from Twitter.

In a statement on the Telegram messaging app, Greene called Twitter’s move un-American. He wrote that his account was deleted after posting statistics from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a government database that includes unverified information.

“Twitter is an enemy of America and can’t deal with the truth”, Greene argued. “That’s fine. I will show America that we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies.”

Twitter had previously suspended the account for periods ranging from 12 hours to one week.

The ban applies to Greene’s personal account, @mtgreenee, but does not affect his official Twitter account, @RepMTG.

In a tweet posted shortly before the weeklong suspension in July, Greene claimed that the virus is not dangerous for people who are not obese and those under the age of 65. However, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been nearly 250,000 deaths of people under the age of 65 in the United States involving COVID-19.

Green had called the one-week suspension a communist-style attack on free speech.
