Traffic in the British port of Dover returns to “normal flow” this Sunday after days of long traffic jams and scenes of chaos for British holidaymakers due to additional post-Brexit border controls and the lack of staff by French authorities at checkpoints. of control.

As reported by the port authorities themselves on their Twitter account, the emergency system activated to resolve traffic jams has terminated its functions around 02:15 this morning and now traffic can proceed directly to the port.

The situation contrasts with the chaotic scenes that began to appear on Friday, when passenger cars had to wait at least six hours, and commercial trucks up to 18 hours, to cross the port.

These traffic jams have come during one of the busiest periods for overseas travel from the UK, with most schools in England and Wales closing for the summer.

In recent days, British and French politicians have blamed each other for the traffic jams. The foreign minister and candidate for the leadership of the Conservative Party, Liz Truss, denounced that delays were “unacceptable”, and blamed the lack of French personnel at the border.

“This terrible situation should have been totally avoidable and is unacceptable. We need France to act to increase capacity at the border in order to limit any further disruption,” he said in statements collected by ‘The Guardian’.

For his part, Pierre-Henri Dumont, deputy for Calais, assured that these traffic jams were “a consequence of Brexit” and he has taken it for granted that they will happen again in the short, medium term.

Dumont also lamented that the port of Dover was too small and that there were too few posts for border staff due to lack of space, according to Sky News.
