Tommy Lee: living in scandal at age 60

It looked like a relic until a few months ago. After all, Mötley Crüe, the hard rock band and glam metal of which he has been the drummer since its foundation, has been out of the charts for decades, has not released a new studio album for 14 years and is basically dedicated to doing farewell or reunion tours before a large audience of nostalgic (And, perhaps ironically, it describes itself on its website as “the most famous rock band in the world”). But if Tommy Lee knows something, it’s how to get noticed. At almost 60 years old (he will be in October: he was born in 1962 in Athens, Greece, the son of a US military deployed in Europe), the musician has experienced a kind of public resurrection for all kinds of reasons. And few of them have to do with art.

The Hulu chain, owned by the Disney corporation, premiered the miniseries last February. Pam & Tommyproduced by actor Seth Rogen, and which deals with the story of how a vindictive carpenter, who was not paid for some jobs, stole and released a videotape that contained intimate images of the honeymoon of the playmate and TV star Pamela Anderson and Tommy, who at the time, in the mid-1990s, was her new husband. The spread of the tape was immense (so much so that it is considered the first viral video in history) and caused enormous psychological damage to the actress, who ended up divorcing Lee in 1998.

The miniseries, in which he was played by Sebastian Stan, star of the saga of avengers, was a moderate success, but served to throw the drummer back into the spotlight (Pamela Anderson symptomatically complained of being re-victimized by the new exposure and chose to stay out of the inevitable gossip). And from there, Tommy’s old showboating machine, still the same tall, skinny, lanky, tattooed guy he’s always been, kicked in again.

Mötley Crüe returned to the stage last June, to headline a tour alongside other famous ’80s groups like Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. A week into the concerts, Tommy broke four ribs in an accident. But he can’t do without such a flashy character without disappointing the audience, so the musician has been performing live and even playing the first pieces of sets every night, before a stand-in takes over the job. Although not everything is hunky-dory: a video, last July, revealed the possible use of playback, because it shows how the drums start playing just before Tommy hits it. The note of the possible cheating spread a day after guitarist Nikki Sixx publicly praised his partner’s heroics for playing fractured…

As if this were not enough, last Friday Tommy decided that it was a good idea to green his porn laurels and uploaded to Instagram a selfie with explicit frontal nudity. That is to say, that Tommy appeared in it with his penis in the air. The image lasted a few hours online before the metalhead deleted it. That didn’t stop him from becoming trending topic of Twitter nor that the networks were filled with memes that praised, criticized or satirized him. Accusations that it is just another trick, aimed at attracting more public to the stadiums where Mötley and company perform, were also frequent. But who can be outraged by the antics of a group that has always defended that rock is just fun and never took itself too seriously? This veteran of a thousand battles continues to laugh at the world in the face.
