The United States government has announced a plan to favor the “legal and orderly” entry of Venezuelans, under which the North American country will accept the arrival of 24,000 migrants and will return to Mexico all those who try to cross the border irregularly.

The Department of Homeland Security has warned that, so far this year, Venezuelan migration on the southern border has almost quadrupled, which contrasts with the downward trend in the flow from Central America. On average, more than 15,000 Venezuelans have been intercepted per month by US authorities this year, although in September the number shot up to 33,000.

With “immediate” effect, Venezuelans who enter the United States without authorization “will be returned to Mexico.” The two neighboring countries have also agreed to strengthen their collaboration to combat human trafficking and increase surveillance on the common border, among other measures that Washington has yet to detail.

In exchange, the Joe Biden government offers to accept 24,000 Venezuelans, on a case-by-case basis. Those who want to benefit from the plan must have a sponsor in the United States and pass a security filter, while those who have been expelled from US territory in the last five years or try to migrate irregularly after the announcement of the plan are banned. the initiative, also taking into account the illegal entries in Mexico and Panama.

“These actions make it clear that Venezuelans have a legal and orderly way to enter the United States and that this legal entry is the only way,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement defending the measured as an “opportunity”.

The UN estimates that there are more than 7.1 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants worldwide, of which more than 80 percent are being hosted in 17 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
