The House of Representatives of the United States has approved this Wednesday a bill that forces the railway companies and the workers of the sector to accept an agreement to avoid a general strike that harms the US economy.

The text has been approved with 290 votes in favor to 137 against, with at least 79 Republicans joining Democrats to push the initiative forward. The unions had threatened to go on strike if an agreement for the sector was not reached before December 1.

The House has also passed a separate resolution to provide seven days of paid leave instead of one, which was the main disagreement of the various unions representing railway workers.

The speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, has specified before the vote that some 750,000 workers could lose their jobs in the first two weeks of a possible strike, for which she has urged congressmen to “safeguard the financial security of families Americans”, according to Bloomberg.

After that, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, has congratulated the congressmen for approving a bill that imposes “urgent measures” to avoid a railway closure, as reported by the White House in a statement.

“This overwhelming bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives makes it clear that Democrats and Republicans agree that a rail shutdown would be devastating to our economy and families across the country,” he said.
