The United Nations on Friday urged North Korea to denuclearize the country and reverse the law approved on Thursday that allows the use of nuclear weapons preventively and not just in response to a foreign attack.

Asked about the recent approval by the North Korean Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) of legislation that would ‘de facto’ convert the country into a Nuclear State, the spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, has conveyed the concern of the United Nations .

“I can tell you that the secretary general (Antonio Guterres) is deeply concerned about the adoption of the law on North Korea’s policy on nuclear forces,” Dujarric detailed during a press conference.

“The Secretary-General reiterates his call for North Korea to resume dialogue with major stakeholders, with a view to achieving sustainable peace and the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the (Korean) peninsula. And we will send it to you in writing.” added the spokesman.

According to the UN, Pyongyang “continues to ignore” Security Council resolutions to cease nuclear activities, including the development of missiles with ballistic missile technology.

However, North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Um, has strongly declared his intention to “never” give up nuclear weapons, while also pushing through a law so that the country never gets rid of such weapons.

“We are not going to give up the right to legitimate defense, which depends on the future security of the country and the people (…). We must never give up our nuclear weapons,” Kim said in a speech, according to the North Korean agency. KCNA.
