The United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia has called on the authorities of the South American country to reinforce security conditions in the areas where the signatories of the Peace Agreements reside.

The head of the mission, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, has denounced that in the last two weeks four ex-combatants who joined the peace process promoted by the Government of Juan Manuel Santos in 2016 with the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have been murdered. ).

The United Nations Verification Mission has recalled that, since the agreements were signed, more than 330 former FARC combatants have been killed, according to the Colombian television network RCN.

“A priority for any peace agreement must be the safeguarding of the lives of those who laid down their arms in good faith with the certainty that they would be protected,” Ruiz Massieu stressed.

On the other hand, the representative of the United Nations has recognized that the next Executive, led by the president-elect, Gustavo Petro, and who will be installed next Wednesday, “has an enormous opportunity and responsibility to accelerate the implementation of the Peace Agreement.”

Likewise, Ruiz Massieu has urged Petro to promote more than thirty norms related to peace that are still pending, among which is the rural reform and a project that provides guarantees for political participation.

The UN official has celebrated that, under Petro’s leadership, “there are good, very good reasons for optimism”, although he has asked for transparency in the use of funds for the implementation of peace.

This appeal from the United Nations comes after the Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) reported on Wednesday the death of Noel Humberto Castro Colorado, a former FARC guerrilla and signer of the Peace Agreement.
