The threat of ‘ransomware’ grows in Spain, which is already the seventh most affected country

Spain has climbed one place in the classification of countries most affected by ‘ransomware’which has placed the country as one of the main strategic targets of cybercriminals.

This is one of the main conclusions of the semi-annual report Threat Landscape Report that the cybersecurity firm S21sec has been prepared to analyze the evolution of cybercrime in the first half of the year.

A ‘ransomware’ is a harmful program or ‘malware’ that limits access to certain areas or files of the infected computer and asks for a ransom in exchange for his release.

To prepare its report, the S21sec team has monitored the public activity of threat actors in more than 50 blogs of ‘ransomware’ groups in the ‘deep web’, ‘dark web’ and other forums of an underground nature. In total, the entity has registered 1,466 ‘ransomware’ attacks, with lockbit as the most active ‘malware’ family.

By country, the report places the United States as the one that more of these attacks has receivedwith 604. Germany and the United Kingdom follow with 90 and 86 attacks, respectively.

In the case of Spain, the country has climbed one position compared to the second half of 2021 and is the seventh country that has concentrated the most threats of this type during the analyzed period, with a total of 34.

THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF UKRAINE HOLDS ON THE ENERGY SECTOR

By sectors, ransomware has focused especially on attacking the technology, industrial, retail and construction industries, which have exceeded 90 victims separately.

Beyond these, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has put the energy sector in Europe in check, which has received 43 ‘ransomware’ attacks directed against companies. Its objective has varied from the search for an economic benefit to the destruction or paralysis of electrical infrastructures.

The report highlights among these attacks on the energy industry, those that occurred in February, which targeted companies in the supply chain, suppliers, facilities or systems.

MORE THAN 11,900 VULNERABILITIES IN THE FIRST SEMESTER

The study has also detected a total of 11,925 vulnerabilities in the last six months, with March as the worst month, with 2,051 cases. By alert level, the firm has highlighted 2,044 as critics and 4,925 risk something.

‘Log4Shell’, ‘Dogwalk’ and ‘Sophos’ They have been unmarked, in turn, as the three vulnerabilities that have been exploited the most in this first half of the year.
