Gregorio Romero left his home in Moctezuma, in the State of Sonora, on November 27. On his return he became disoriented and lost. The 84-year-old man’s family reported him missing four days later, on December 1. In total, he spent a week missing. His dog, El Palomo, managed to locate his owner, according to the Sonora Prosecutor’s Office. The authorities assured that El Palomo led them “between hills, paths and ravines” to the place where Romero was, three kilometers from his home.

On other occasions, Romero had visited the towns near Moctezuma, so the alarm did not sound immediately among his relatives, who decided to wait a few days for his return. Despite this, his niece Ramona began to worry, since the man had had lapses of memory loss, and she reported him missing.

Before El Palomo found its owner, the authorities had carried out several joint search operations. The National Guard, the Municipal Police, the Municipal Civil Protection Unit and even a dog trained for searches, among others, participated in the work. But it was El Palomo, a two-year-old mestizo, in charge of facilitating the location of his owner. The authorities transferred Romero to a hospital of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). At the center, he was diagnosed with “dehydration and malnutrition”, for which he had to stay two days in the hospital. “Palomo has remained day and night at the door of the hospital, waiting for the return of his beloved Don Goyo [Romero]”, the Prosecutor’s Office stated in the letter.

Two days after his admission to the hospital, he was discharged and was finally able to return home. “This Tuesday, December 6, Don Goyo went out to sunbathe as part of his recovery and, of course, his faithful friend sat near him to protect him,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
