The Salvadoran Prosecutor’s Office will appeal a ruling that favored leaders accused of stampeding at the Cuscatlan stadium

(CNN) — The Attorney General of El Salvador announced this Friday that it will file an appeal to reverse the ruling of a San Salvador court that favored the five defendants for the human stampede that took place on May 20 at the Cuscatlan stadium.

“Those responsible will continue to be detained. All legal tools will continue to be used to ensure that justice is done.” said the Prosecutor’s Office on his Twitter account.

It should be remembered that a Peace Court in San Salvador had ordered the suspension of the criminal proceedings against three leaders of Alianza Futbol Club and two employees of the company that manages the Cuscatlan stadium after they reached a conciliation agreement with fifty people affected, who They presented themselves as offended in the criminal process.

For its part, the Prosecutor’s Office accused the five detainees for the alleged crimes of culpable homicide, culpable injuries and public havoc, since the investigations determined that there was negligence in the organization of the sporting event. The defendants have pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor’s Office also clarified that the stampede, which occurred during a quarterfinal match in the local soccer league, left nine dead and not 12 as previously reported by the authorities, as well as nearly a hundred people hospitalized.

As a result of what happened, the Salvadoran Football Federation and the First Division of Football announced on May 24 that they were ending the championship, in order to adopt the necessary security measures and protocols to avoid a new tragedy.
