The Russian Luna-25 project has successfully taken off: they want to be the first country to exploit lunar water

Russia has set out to win the new space race by landing on the south pole of the Moon. The interests go far beyond achieving national pride. The hidden face of the Moon is a unique geopolitical point and Russia intends to fully exploit the water in the form of ice

The Russian lunar program has been resumed after its suspension in 1976, when the project belonged to the former Soviet Union. As reported by Reuters, the Luna-25 probe was launched at 1:20 Spanish time from the Vostochni cosmodrome, some 5,000 kilometers east of Moscow.

The launch has forced the evacuation of the village of Shakhtinskyisoutheast of the cosmodrome, due to the risk of falling rocket boosters after separating from the spacecraft.

The Luna-25 module is already heading towards the south pole of the satellite with the aim of investigate the internal structure of the Moon and how to exploit its water resources. According to The newspapersome Russian media have expressed interest in building a base on the dark side of the Moon not only to exploit its ice, but also to extract oxygen.

The mission will take five days to reach lunar orbit, where it will remain for about a week until landing at the South Pole. This probe is expected to operate on the lunar surface for one year.

New players in the space race

Moscow’s direct competitor in the middle of the Soviet era was NASA, now India has appeared. Both countries have a good diplomatic relationship, but they are true rivals in the space field.

India has tried to get ahead of Russia with the same interests launching its Chandraayan space mission on July 14. The module entered lunar orbit on August 5 and is scheduled to land around the 23rd of this month.

With this mission, India would be the fourth country to walk on the Moon after Russia, the United States and China. The latter managed to land on the dark side of the satellite in 2019, Moscow is now following suit.

Russia has reaffirmed its role in the race to colonize the lunar south pole: it intends to create an alliance between Russia and China to build a Sino-Russian base between 2031 and 2035. In addition, he is already working on the Luna-26 and Luna-27 missions for the years 2027 and 2028 respectivelyhas reported The newspaper.
