The Moscow district court of Lefortovo has decided on Tuesday to maintain the detention of the American journalist of the newspaper ‘The Wall Street Journal’ Evan Gershkovich after rejecting his appeal.

Thus, the decision remains unchanged and the appeal has been “dismissed”, as reported by the court itself, which has endorsed that the journalist continue to be imprisoned in a preventive detention center.

In this sense, he has ruled that his arrest for alleged espionage on March 30 complies with the law and that he will have to remain in custody until the trial against him is held, according to information from the Interfax news agency.

Gershkovich’s defense had requested the Russian Justice to modify the preventive measures imposed against him to achieve his release from the detention center. However, lawyer Tatiana Nozhkina has indicated that, despite the court decision, the journalist continues to plead not guilty.

Russian Intelligence detained the US citizen on March 29 in the city of Yekaterinburg when he was trying to obtain supposedly secret information. Russian authorities have accused him of collecting information on US instructions regarding the activities of Russian companies linked to the military sector.

However, the US government has branded this detention as illegal, while Moscow has completely ruled out any type of prisoner exchange in which he is involved.
