The rescue ship ‘Ocean Viking’ of the NGO SOS Mediterranee has rescued 307 migrants in operations carried out in the Mediterranean Sea during the last 24 hours.

As the organization itself has indicated in a statement, more than a hundred minors are among those rescued, although three of the operations were carried out on Sunday, while a fourth took place this Monday.

The ship has rescued another 39 migrants who had been shipwrecked in the Mediterranean throughout the day, although on Sunday the ship managed to help another 73 people, including a one-year-old baby. All of them were aboard an inflatable boat in poor condition and about 60 kilometers from the coast of Libya.

Last May, during its last mission in the central Mediterranean, the ‘Ocean Viking managed to rescue some 300 people, but had to wait ten days to receive a safe port on the island of Sicily in which to disembark them.

Since the beginning of 2022, some 990 migrants have disappeared in the area, of which 828 have done so in the central Mediterranean, which is the most dangerous route in the world for migrants.

UN data puts more than 2,000 dead and missing in the Mediterranean throughout 2021. Every year, thousands of people flee conflict and poverty in an attempt to reach Europe. Most leave from Libya, whose coasts are about 300 kilometers from Italy.
