The president of Peru assures that Telefonica has agreed to settle its debt with the country’s treasury

Pedro Castillo, President of Peru – PRESIDENCY OF PERU

The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, assured this Tuesday that he recently had a conversation with Telefonica in which the company expressed its willingness to settle its debt with the treasury of the Andean country.

“I would like to greet such an important company that to this day has owed the country, I am referring to this international company, Telefonica. Less than 24 hours ago we had a direct call [en el] that this company has agreed to pay the debt to the Peruvian people to [que podamos] invest in health, to invest in education,” Castillo said in an event broadcast by TVPeru.

“It is good that these companies are already on the side of this country. Because although it is true that we all use this telephone service, this network, they are also aware that they owe the country and today they are willing to pay their debt,” he added.

According to the Peruvian newspaper ‘La Republica’ last June, Telefonica is the largest debtor to the Peruvian treasury, with a total of 5,450 million soles (1,415 million euros). The total debt to the Treasury of the Andean country of all debtors amounts to 27,693 million (7,190 million euros), of which 93% comes from a hundred companies.

Asked by Europa Press, Telefonica has declined to comment on this matter.
