The President of Chile describes the local elections in Nicaragua as undemocratic

Chilean President Gabriel Boric – PRESIDENCY OF CHILE

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, described this Wednesday the local elections in Nicaragua as an electoral process “without freedom”, underlining the importance of reestablishing “democratic guarantees and freedoms” in the country.

“Municipal elections were held in Nicaragua on Sunday. Of 153 mayorships ‘in dispute,’ Ortega won all 153. An electoral process that is carried out without freedom, reliable electoral justice and imprisoned or banned opponents is not a democracy anywhere in the world,” The Chilean president has asserted in a message on his Twitter account.

Boric has highlighted his intention to promote in international summits the need to guarantee in Nicaragua the “reestablishment” of the democratic guarantees and freedoms “characteristic of a rule of law.”

Likewise, he has asserted that he will promote the way in the Central American State to put an end to “all attacks against opponents.”

Last Sunday, November 6, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) of President Daniel Ortega won 100 percent of the Nicaraguan mayoralties in municipal elections marked by the absence of opposition parties, which are vetoed by the courts.

The opposition has described the elections as an “electoral farce”, although the Executive has tried to defend the result by pointing to a high turnout. However, the independent organization Urnas Abiertas assured an abstention rate of 82.67 percent and a turnout of 17.33 percent.
