The Ombudsman’s Office has reproached the country’s president, Pedro Castillo, on Tuesday for his criticism of the Pan-American Television network for publishing allegedly false information about alleged commissions and has stressed that public officials are subject to “greater scrutiny and criticism citizen”.

The television network announced on Monday that Castillo’s former adviser Bruno Pacheco would have confirmed to the Prosecutor’s Office that the president received commissions for the appointment of Hugo Chavez Arevalo as head of the state oil company Petroperu.

After this, Castillo stepped forward to deny this information and announced that he will file a complaint with Panamericana de Television for spreading “false news whose sole purpose is to deceive and manipulate citizens.”

Now, the Ombudsman’s Office has launched a message on its Twitter social network profile to criticize the president’s attitude, recalling that “in a democracy, public officials are subject to greater scrutiny and citizen criticism.”

“The improper use of criminal or administrative legislation by those who exercise political power can be considered a censorship mechanism,” warned the organization, which has stressed that “the free circulation of ideas and news on matters related to the Government guarantees transparency and control of public management”.

As reported by the aforementioned television network, Pacheco would have confirmed to the Public Ministry that the president received up to 30,000 soles –slightly less than 7,500 euros– while he himself received up to 15,000 soles –slightly more than 3,700 euros– for appointments in Petroperu.

The Prosecutor’s Office maintains that both the president and his former adviser – a fugitive from Justice for almost three months – would have been members of this organization, which would have dedicated itself to granting public works concessions to private companies in exchange for bribes.
