The offices of the future arrive in Spain: video game rooms, hairdresser, gym and green areas

No more dim light from a fluorescent hanging over a white cubicle. The offices of the future are at the forefront of technology, are bright and have rest areas. The new headquarters of L’Oreal, NTT and the renovated Nave de Motores de Méndez Álvaro inaugurate the new work spaces of the future.

More than 20,000 square meters, spacious rooms with natural light, numerous meeting rooms, and a beauty salon are some of its features, which also impose a new model of hybrid work. This is what it will be like to work in one of these large offices.

Collaborative spaces with multiple meeting rooms

Teleworking has been imposed in most Spanish companies; at least partially. The conception of arriving at the office and having a permanent position has been left behind.

The new corporate headquarters of the multinational NTT Data opened at the beginning of the year in Barcelona, with a space of more than 20,000 square meters for about 4,000 workers which, until now, were spread across Europe.

Their offices are designed to house a hybrid work model, with 40% of the weekly working day in person and 60% teleworking. During office time, meetings are promoted in collaborative spaces to foster teamwork.

The offices house meeting rooms equipped with giant screens and cameras to combine face-to-face meetings with virtual ones.

For its part, at the new L’Oreal headquarters in Madrid the desks do not belong to any worker, but each one chooses the table in which they want to work that day in the office when they arrive. By establishing a hybrid work model, individual spaces are reduced and collaborative and meeting rooms are expanded.

The 76 state-of-the-art L’Oreal meeting rooms feature giant screensdigital whiteboard, projector, W-Fi 6 connectivity, interactive applications and large tables.

Sustainability and energy saving

Energy efficiency has ceased to be a pending subject for many Spanish companies to become a regulated matter. Between August and September of last year, the saving measures of the Royal Decree on Energy Savings came into effect.

Some of those that are in force this winter order to pass an energy inspection, adopt an automatic closing system for doors that face the street and set a maximum temperature of 19 degrees in the office.

These are, however, insufficient for the energy efficiency approach of the binding objectives of the European Union for 2030, so that the new offices will have to adopt a real efficiency and sustainability plan.

In the case of L’Oreal, this efficiency translates into low consumption LED lights with presence detection, solar panels to produce energy for internal consumption and chargers to encourage the acquisition of electric cars among its staff.

Services and welfare for employees

The culture of American effort has promoted, in large corporations, the dedication of leaders to turn the office into a welcoming space for your employees and thus motivate them to work harder.

Although this approach has not prevented the high turnover of workers that occurs within large technology companies, it has created a pattern that state-of-the-art offices pursue.

In the headquarters of L’Oreal in Madrid, which has a space of 20,000 square meters for more than a thousand employeesthere is a beauty center with brand products, a hairdresser, a rest room, a gym and a lactation room.

At NTT Data offices, on the other hand, employees pride themselves on having changing rooms with showers to clean up after doing sports during the day. Also, They have a recreation room with video games, ping pong tables, and a canteen with healthy food.

Integrated spaces in the city

Given this variety of services, other office projects go a step further and they are committed to the creation of green areas for walks and rest.

The renowned architect Norman Foster, together with Ortiz y León Arquitectos and with the help of Acciona, has rehabilitated the old engine shed in the Madrid neighborhood of Méndez Álvaro to rent the new offices of the future.

These have maximum energy efficiency, natural light and wide walk areas through its large gardens that will house 300 treesbenches and cycling areas.

Best of all, this 12,000 square meter green space is open to the public, thus integrating the office space into the urban environment.
