More than 429.2 million passengers used public transport last October, which represents 21% of the same month of 2021, according to data made public this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) which ensures that the urban transport increased by 19.1% in the annual rate and interurban by 26.7%. Within the interurban, the 35.6% increase in rail transport stands out.
The variation rate of the number of public transport passengers in Spain for the month of October compared to September was 8.9%.
INE data show that urban transport in Spain was used by more than 257 million passengers in October, 19.1%
more than in the same month of the year 2021.
Metro transport increased by 21.1% in the annual rate. The Palma metro presented the greatest increase (48.3%) and the Bilbao metro the least (12.1%). Among the cities that have a metro, the largest increase in bus transport was registered in Palma (52.7%), and the smallest in Bilbao (10.2%).
Urban bus transport increased by 17.7% in October compared to the same month in 2021, according to INE data.
All the autonomous communities presented positive annual rates in this type of transport. The greatest increases occurred in Extremadura (27.1%), Castilla – La Mancha (23.7%) and the Valencian Community (22%). In turn, Pais Vasco (14%), Galicia (14.1%) and Aragon (14.5%) registered the smallest increases.
More than 123.5 million travelers used interurban transport in October, representing an increase of 26.7% compared to the same month in 2021, according to data from the statistical institute.
By type of transport, rail grew 35.6%, air 26.1%, bus 20.2% and maritime 10.1%.
Cercanias increased 17.3% in bus transport and 33.7% in rail transport. The medium distance grew by 26.7% in bus transport and 79.3% in rail.
Lastly, long distance increased by 48% in bus transport and 22.6% in rail. Within the latter, High Speed grew by 24.2%.
With regard to special and discretionary transport, more than 48.6 million users used special and discretionary transport in October, which represents an increase of 17.3% in the annual rate.
The number of special transport passengers rose 1% and exceeds 31.5 million users. Within this, school fees fell by 2.3%, while labor fees increased by 13.9%.
For its part, discretionary transport grew by 67.1% compared to the same month in 2021, with more than 17 million passengers.
