The New York Times temporarily suspends operating in Russia

New York Times

The American newspaper ‘The New York Times’ has announced this Tuesday the temporary cessation of its activity in Russia as a response to the law approved last week by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and that “criminalizes independent information about the war against Ukraine”.

The paper’s deputy editor-in-chief, Clifford Levy, has shared on his Twitter profile a statement from the deputy editor of the International section, Michael Slackman, indicating that ‘The New York Times’ has been in contact with its legal team to assess and understand the “possible implications of the latest maneuver” of the Russian leader.

Under the new law, prison sentences of up to fifteen years can be enacted for those who “report on the Russian invasion of Ukraine” or for those who “call war on war,” the statement said.

For these reasons, the New York daily has decided to take this decision in view of “protecting the safety and security” of the staff in Russia, which will now be moved to another country. However, Slackman stressed that the journalists will return to Russian territory “as soon as possible” and the situation in the country has been analyzed.

The Russian authorities approved last Friday this new law that seeks, according to the government, to curb “fake news” linked to the conflict with Ukraine.

Russia’s communications regulatory agency, Roskomnadzor, has also limited access to the websites of media outlets such as the British broadcaster BBC, Germany’s Deutsche Welle and other independent media outlets such as Meduza.
