The IAEA reports the explosion of two landmines in the surroundings of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

Visit of an IAEA mission to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant – IAEA

The mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia reported this Thursday the explosion of two landmines in the surroundings of the city’s nuclear power plant, bringing the total number of explosions to five during this week. .

This has been announced by the agency in a statement in which it has detailed that one of the mines exploded on Wednesday afternoon near a channel that transports water to the plant for its cooling system, essential for nuclear safety. However, it has not caused any damage.

The second explosion took place at 1:00 p.m. (local time) on Thursday, about 500 meters from reactor 1. No significant damage has been recorded, although new investigations have been initiated in search of possible fractures.

As with the three previous landmine explosions reported by the IAEA this week, they are believed to have been caused by animals.

The director general of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, has reiterated his “deep concern” about the repetition of this type of landmine explosions near the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, where there have been frequent bombings in the last two months.
