The Hermes Institute advocates protecting digital rights “as an extraordinary competitive advantage”

He think tank Instituto Hermes, dedicated to defending the rights of citizens in the digital environment, is participating these days in the Ibero-American Summit that is being held in the Dominican Republic. The meeting is studying the approval of a common Ibero-American Charter of Principles and Digital Rights for all countries and according to the president of this institution, Enrique Goni, this charter will define the region as a “pioneer in the world.”

The intention is to provide countries with an instrument that guarantees the digital rights of Ibero-American citizens, that inspires national legislation and can be the guide that guides public policy decisions in the enormous challenge that the technological evolution. Goni stressed that it is necessary to ensure that a system of rights and duties in the world on-line similar to the world off line. “We want to make sure that we leave the digital habitat tidy so that our children and our grandchildren don’t accuse us of having left them a digital hell,” she added. Goni believes that “those companies that protect the digital rights of their customers and employees will enjoy an extraordinary competitive advantage” considering the way in which they treat the data of their employees and customers and use cookies, for example.

The 22 countries of the Ibero-American Community of Nations will hold a summit this Friday and Saturday that will finalize three instruments prepared by the different delegations. The XXVIII meeting of the organization will debate in the meetings of foreign ministers and heads of state and government, convened under the slogan “Together for a just and sustainable Ibero-America”, three agreements on climate change, food security and digital divide. The meeting in Santo Domingo, in any case, also seeks to lay the foundations to facilitate integration between the two shores of the Atlantic.
