The Chilean Senate has approved this Wednesday the Government’s request to extend for the fifth time for 15 days the state of emergency declared in the South Macrozone of Chile since mid-May, specifically in the provinces of Arauco and Bio Bio, in addition to the region of The Araucania.

With 36 votes in favor, one abstention and one vote against, the measure had been approved an hour before by the Lower House with 109 votes in favor, 16 against and 9 abstentions, reported ‘Biobio Chile’.

From the Government they have positively valued the extension of the state of emergency. The Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, has assured that they have listened to parliamentarians from different areas in case states of emergency are declared in other areas of the country, since its application in the North Macrozone is being considered.

“This is a complementary measure that does not solve the underlying problems, but that undoubtedly contributes to maintaining the protection of people in the affected areas. We have listened to the different parliamentarians about what is happening in terms of crime in the north and in Los Rio”, the minister has maintained, according to the aforementioned newspaper.

The measure will last until August 31, so next week the Government will evaluate whether to request a new extension.

The Chilean Executive announced in mid-May the imposition of a state of emergency in the South Macrozone, thus allowing the Chilean military to “protect routes and roads” to deal with the situation of violence in La Araucania, the Chilean region with the highest concentration of Mapuche Indians.
