The coalition of the German Government made up of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (PDL) and the Greens have distanced themselves from the requests of the Vice President of Parliament, Wolfgang Kubicki, who this Friday has called for the opening of the ‘Nord Stream’ gas pipeline 2′ with Russia to guarantee the supply of gas for the winter.
Kubicki had declared the opening of the ‘Nord Stream 2’ as a priority for the German government to “prevent the country from running out of fuel, regardless of whether (Russian President) Vladimir Putin is in power or not.”
“We have to open the ‘Nord Stream 2’ as soon as possible to fill our gas deposits for the winter,” said Kubicki, who is also a member of the PLD. “I don’t see any reason not to do it,” he told German media conglomerate RND in an interview.
Kubicki’s request was harshly criticized shortly after by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dimitro Kuleba, who recommended that Germany not become “addicted” to Russian gas and that it remain firm in its decision to restrict supply as a precautionary measure. pressure against Moscow for invading Ukraine.
The secretary general of the Free Democratic Party, Bijan Djir-Sarai, has reproached his own member for “Russia using energy policy as a weapon” and has assured “the unity of the European Union and the United Nations against Russia cannot be commitments”
The leader of the Greens, Omid Nouripour, has also lamented that Kubicki’s proposal is ineffective because Russia is already cutting off supply through another gas pipeline, the ‘Nord Stream 1’, so “it is completely irrelevant how many empty gas pipelines one wants open”.
Nils Schmid, the spokesman for German Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has gone even further in saying that Kubicki was “adopting the language of Russian propaganda” with these remarks.
