The French journalist ex-hostage of the jihadists in Mali returns home

French President Emmanuel Macron went to the Villacoublay military base on the outskirts of Paris on Tuesday to receive French journalist Olivier Dubois, released on Monday after 711 days kidnapped by a group close to Al Qaeda in Mali.

Dubois landed from Niamey, the capital of Niger, in a French official Falcon in Villacoublay, where his wife and two children were also waiting for him.

After getting off the plane, the journalist, who is a correspondent for Libération and the weekly Le Point in the Sahel region, held a meeting with Macron in one of the rooms of the base, which was also approached by several dozen journalists.

He had been kidnapped on April 8, 2021 in Gao, in northern Mali, by the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, a jihadist formation loyal to Al Qaeda, the same one that held the nun captive for more than four years. Colombian Gloria Cecilia Narváez, finally released in October 2021.

His capture occurred when he was going to do an interview with a jihadist official who had met him in Gao and they ambushed him.

After learning of his release, Macron thanked Niger for his intervention and reiterated “France’s commitment to the fight against terrorism in the Sahel.”
