Former Mexican Governor Javier Duarte faces a new criminal process. The former PRI politician has been charged and linked to the process for his probable participation in the crime of forced disappearance in Veracruz, the State Prosecutor’s Office reported Thursday. The local Public Ministry explained that Duarte, who is already in prison in Mexico City for the crimes of money laundering and criminal association, is now under suspicion of having been involved in the disappearance of a person, whose identity was not revealed. In the initial hearing, to which the defendant accessed remotely, the judge ordered a year and a half of preventive detention, a period in which the investigation of the case will take place.

For years, the groups of disappeared relatives in Veracruz had asked that Duarte be tried for this crime. Rosalia Castro, a member of the Solecito Collective, celebrated that the state Public Ministry finally took action on the matter. We are with hope and faith that justice will come to us little by little, ”she declared.
