The books return to the Zocalo of the capital for the XXII edition of the FIL in Mexico City. From October 7 to 16, this public square will be the scene of presentations, conferences and concerts in which thousands of volumes, from hundreds of publishers, will be offered and, in some cases, given away to the public. For this year, the FIL Zocalo has scheduled more than 200 activities in which the book will be the leading mediator in multi-thematic analysis tables, ranging from literary criticism to social, political and necessarily conjunctural criticism of the country: a characteristic hallmark that for years has nuanced this event.

On this occasion, the XXII International Book Fair of Mexico City entitles ‘Latin America at the forefront’ as the central theme that, it supposes, will mark the guideline of the dialogues of the almost 500 speakers (in which writers, critics , political scientists, journalists and graphic artists) scheduled within the 10 days that the fair lasts; Noam Chomsky, Juan Villoro, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Elena Poniatowska and Jean-Luc Melenchon are just some of the most prominent. But musical groups and performers of international stature have also been invited to this party, as is the case with the Serbian band Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestrafrom the Mexican Circus Band Tricycle or the flutist Horacio Franco.

Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Secretary of Culture of Mexico City, announced that the names of the three main stages of this edition will be ‘Ricardo Flores Magon’, ‘Rosario Ibarra de Piedra’ and ‘Ernesto Cardenal’, in order to honor these dissident characters, icons of struggle and ideologues of freedom in Mexico and Latin America. In addition to the Ministry of Culture of the capital, the Brigade to Read in Freedom and the National Chamber of the Publishing Industry have joined the organization of this event. Although in recent editions the FIL Zocalo was interrupted in person due to the pandemic, it has not stopped operating throughout its 22-year history. Even with sanitary measures in between, this year readers will be able to ask their pen heroes for autographs.

As part of the activities, it is planned to pay tribute to personalities from the world of letters who have recently passed away, such as the case of the editor and cultural promoter Carlos Martinez Renteria, the writer Almudena Grandes, and the poet David Huerta, from whom they will hold reading days in honor of his work.

What are the most outstanding events of the FIL Zocalo 2022?

Undoubtedly, one of the most attractive tables at this year’s FIL Zocalo is the one that includes the political scientist and linguist Noam Chomsky, author of books as controversial as they are current, such as The guardians of freedom (1990), fear of democracy (1992) or the culture of terrorism (2003). The event will be broadcast virtually on the ‘Ricardo Flores Magon’ forum, on Saturday, October 8 at 3:00 p.m. Earlier, at noon, on the same stage, the Fine Arts for Literature Awards will be presented, by writers such as Beatriz Espejo, Hector Perea and Alejandro Arteaga.

On Sunday 8, around 3:00 p.m., at Flores Magon, the writer Paco Ignacio Taibo II presents his most recent book, Freedom. Thirteen stories for history, in which the author plays with the environments and passions of some revolutionary heads of history. Two hours later, right there, one of the many clones of Juan Villoro will participate in the talk entitled “The excesses and miracles of football”, one of the most attractive on this year’s billboard.

In the inaugural program on Friday the 7th, a tribute to the activist Rosario Ibarra de Piedra will be carried out, by the writer Elena Poniatowska, the Head of Government Claudia Sheinbaum, and Rosario Piedra Ibarra, president of the National Human Rights Commission. . Later the Serbian gang Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra will light up the night and thus close the first day of this fair.

Representatives of the political cartoon, such as Rafael Barajas ‘El Fisgon’, Monero Hernandez and Helio Flores, appear on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 12, at 7:30 p.m., for the talk “Moneros in the Zocalo”. In addition, ‘El Fisgon’, together with another clone of Juan Villoro, presents the most recent installment of Professor Ziper’s children’s series: Professor Zipper and the missing words (2022), edited by the Economic Culture Fund.

The Mexico City International Book Fair has become, over time, a long-awaited festival for book lovers who live in the metropolis. But all the parishioners of literature will be able to see the main events in the live broadcasts that the Secretariat of Culture of the capital and the Brigade to Read in Freedom will do through their social networks.
