The European Union has called this Monday to take advantage of the opportunity that opens in Ethiopia to agree on a ceasefire, after the regional forces of Tigray, in the north of Ethiopia, announced that they are open for a ceasefire in the conflict that since November 2020 they have waged with the Government of Addis Ababa.

In a message on social networks, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has echoed the announcement of the Tigray forces and has joined the positions of the African Union or the United States to request progress in the solution to the crisis.

“Everyone must take advantage of this opportunity. Right now. The EU is ready to offer its support,” said the head of European diplomacy.

The passage of the regional forces from Tigray opens the door to a ceasefire in the open war that has been going on with the country’s central government for two years. Meanwhile, Abiy Ahmed’s Executive had said before the announcement that he was ready to organize meetings “anytime, anywhere”.

The president of the African Union Commission, the Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat, has welcomed this episode, assuring that Ethiopia is facing a “unique opportunity” to end the conflict.

In this sense, the AU member has urged both parties to work urgently to achieve an immediate ceasefire, by participating in direct talks with the participation of mutually agreed international partners.

Similarly, the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, has congratulated the African country for its progress in the peace process, in a message addressed within the framework of the Ethiopian New Year, which was celebrated this Sunday. “The United States stands with the people of Ethiopia and supports ongoing diplomatic efforts to realize their desire to live in peace,” Blinken said.
