The European Union has urged the parties in Iraq to act with “maximum restraint” to avoid a further escalation of tensions, after thousands of people have demonstrated in Baghdad after the withdrawal announced by the cleric Muqtada al Sadr, a key figure in the political life of the Arab country.

“It is key that all actors avoid any action that could lead to more violence,” the European External Action Service has claimed, in a statement in which it has alluded to dialogue as “the only way to resolve differences.”
