The European Union has announced this Friday the launch of two initiatives with the countries of Central Asia for common projects of water, energy and satellite connectivity in the framework of Europe’s attempts to promote relations with a key region in terms of connectivity and green energy.

“Before you were at the end, between two different worlds that turned their backs. Samarkanda was in the middle of nowhere, and now you are in the middle of everything. This is history moving and we have to accompany history with our actions,” he said. assured the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, from Uzbekistan where the EU-Central Asia Connectivity conference was held.

In this sense, he pointed out during his speech that the EU is “more committed than ever” to working together with the region and the Asian countries to work among themselves to avoid the “scars of history”.

Within the framework of the conference focused on infrastructure projects, the head of European diplomacy referred to the launch of two initiatives, one focused on water, energy and climate change to contribute to the sustainable management of energy resources and tackling climate change in the region and another to improve Central Asia’s access to the internet through satellite connectivity.

All the countries of the region will participate in both initiatives except Turkmenistan, which for the moment is left out of the digital and Internet transition project, explained the spokesman for the European Commission, Eric Mamer, when asked about the announcement in the community capital.

These initiatives are part of the EU’s efforts to get closer to a region in which, as Borrell has defended, it invests more than Russia and China. “We are ready to do more, in the next four years we have committed 300 million in grants for both bilateral and regional projects,” said the High Representative, noting that now the challenge is to identify new ways to promote the potential of relations between Europe and Central Asia.
