The coronavirus pandemic-related tenant protections put in place in the United States are about to expire, so there could be a huge wave of evictions across the country that will hit the lowest renters.

In Los Angeles County, the moratorium ends on December 31 and more than 30,000 tenants could have to leave their homes, according to projections made from data from the county Superior Court, according to the US public broadcaster NPR.

At least 69,000 people are homeless in this county, the most populous in the United States, according to a count by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

Los Angeles “will have the highest number of evictions and possibly worsen the homelessness issue,” said Tim Thomas, director of the UC Berkeley Eviction Research Network.

“In August, historical averages for evictions have been reached after the end of the moratorium in many parts of the country and we are already exceeding the historical average,” he added.

In the last decade there have been between 40,000 and 50,000 evictions per year in Los Angeles County, a figure that fell to around 13,000 due to the pandemic, mainly thanks to public rent subsidies or the moratorium on evictions, the sociologist has highlighted. from the University of California-Los Angeles Kyle Nelson.

Nelson has highlighted that the eviction data is already at more than 3,000 per month, so they could return to the 55,000 per year that was registered just before the pandemic.
