The Italian nationalist politician Umberto Bossi has been left out of Parliament for the first time in 35 years, after the party he founded, the League, suffered a strong electoral setback in the Lombardy region, for which he was running.

At the end of the 1980s, Bossi founded the Northern League, an alliance of independence movements in northern Italy with which he managed to gain national relevance and even enter the government, led by Silvio Berlusconi.

A corruption scandal forced him to resign a decade ago, which paved the way for a new stage led by Matteo Salvini in which the League left behind its surname ‘Norte’ to go to all of Italy and gain weight at the national level, managing to enter in various governments.

Bossi, although relegated, is still honorary leader and was on the party’s lists in the Lombardy region, but data from the Ministry of the Interior confirm that he will not have any seats for the first time in 35 years, reports ‘La Repubblica’. The League has been overtaken in some of its strongholds by the Brothers of Italy, which now aspires to lead the Government with Giorgia Meloni.
