The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, assured this Monday that she had a “productive” meeting in Washington with the Argentine Minister of Economy, Silvina Batakis, in which they reviewed the country’s situation and began to outline the future of Argentina’s economic program agreed with the agency to refinance a debt of 42.9 billion euros ($44 billion).

“Another productive meeting with Minister Silvina Batakis. We celebrate her initial efforts to strengthen fiscal sustainability and we agree on the importance of implementing decisive programs to address Argentina’s economic and social challenges,” Batakis said on his Twitter account.

Batakis had several meetings in Washington on Monday, where she was accompanied at all times by the Argentine ambassador, Jorge Argüello, the deputy minister, Karina Angeletti, as well as officials from the Embassy, ​​as reported by ‘La Nacion’.

In all his meetings, Batakis has explained his first measures. Batakis’ last stop of the day was at the World Bank, where he met with the organization’s executive director, Axel van Trotsenburg. The World Bank has announced that it has approved financing of 195 million euros ($200 million) to support Argentine small and medium-sized companies in innovation and technology.

The World Bank has already granted $195 million to Argentina over the last decade to support the country’s productive innovation agenda.

“The World Bank is dedicated to a sustainable and equitable recovery in Argentina. The Bank has stepped up its support to the country through these challenging years, with record levels of financing: €2.051 billion ($2.1 billion) in 2021 and similar levels expected in 2022 and 2023,” Van Trotsenburg said, according to a World Bank statement.
