The Democratic Labor Party of Brazil has asked to declare the country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, ineligible for the next elections, due to his speech proclaimed on Independence Day, of a marked electoral nature.

The political party has filed a lawsuit with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to investigate President Bolsonaro for abuse of political and economic power during the Independence Day events, held on September 7.

The PDT has argued that the acts during the National Day of Brazil should be dedicated to extolling “a historical fact for the country”, but that, however, the appointment became a kind of “electoral platform (…) financed with public money”.

“Jair Bolsonaro, taking advantage of his functional status, took advantage of the entire superstructure of the civic event of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil financed with public money, specifically to promote his image before the voters,” they have criticized.

President Bolsonaro took advantage of an act of commemoration for the second centenary of the country’s independence to proclaim a speech in which he alluded to the next presidential elections, scheduled for early October, as “a fight between good and evil”.

In addition, he called on his supporters to try to convince “those who think differently” that voting for him is “the best thing for Brazil”, since “evil” has already ruled the South American nation for 14 years, in what is a direct criticism former presidents Dilma Rousseff (2011-2017) and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2004-2011), who is now emerging as his main rival in the elections.
