The Colombian Defense Minister, Ivan Velasquez, has warned of the omissions of the Armed Forces in the face of paramilitary incursions or the creation of new militias of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) in the Pacific region.

“We could not say of links, but at least of omissive actions of the Public Force that are being attributed in some regions,” Velasquez said, according to the Caracol Radio station.

“They have to make a permanent demonstration of their capacity, their effectiveness and efficiency in dismantling these organizations. In no case can they be attributed omissive conduct that is increasing their operational capacity,” added the minister.

Velasquez has transferred the matter to the commander of the Military Forces, General Helder Giraldo, and has highlighted that the National Commission of Guarantees and Security has been reactivated in the face of the increase in murders of social leaders, defenders of Human Rights and signatories of the peace agreements with the FARC.

On the other hand, with regard to the complaint by Senator Aida Quilcue about an incursion of more than 1,000 heavily armed men into the indigenous reservation of Chimborazo, Cauca, Velasquez has stressed that it is a challenge for the Public Force to prevent these acts they repeat themselves

“That facts are presented as denounced by the senator, there is the challenge of the Public Force to prevent their repetition, dismantle the organizations and press so that, through military means or political and legal negotiation, these organizations can be dismantled,” has pointed.
