The best guide to enjoy Los Angeles traveling with children

It’s no secret that the West Coast of the United States drives us crazy. So much so that we dedicated our first Mola Viajar travel guide to it, published in 2019. Well, of all the States we visited, one of its cities draws our attention above the rest and not only because of its immense size, but also for the number of activities that can be done with children. Prepare yourselves, to fulfill all of them you need a complete vacation.

La La Land I already made it clear as soon as the movie started Los Angeles is great, but it’s immensely big and cars are king here (especially in traffic jams, present day in and day out). So our first piece of advice is to keep in mind that this is not a city to walk around, and that public transport does not always have the appropriate connections to reach all points of interest. Therefore, plan your visits well before relying on the metro or the bus. And if you are lucky enough to fly over the metropolis with the plane, do us a favor and look out the window if you can… It seems that there are no limits!

Activities with children without leaving the city

Los Angeles has a great cultural offer and some wonderful museums, but here are the ones that will entertain the little ones in the family the most.

Museum of Natural History. Natural science museums rarely disappoint. The one in Los Angeles offers the possibility of learning about dinosaurs, insects, birds, reptiles, minerals, fossils or knowing more about the history of humanity in a very fun way.

California Science Center. It is full of permanent exhibitions and also some temporary ones, often interactive, that make children get involved and learn about topics as different as the beginning of life, the development of aviation and the conquest of space, fire… visit can be completed with a movie in the IMAX theater. The theme of them is changing, what does not change is that they all manage to capture their attention.

La Brea Tar Pits. Fossils of mammoths, mastodons, saber teeth, excavations in the middle of the city… A return to the past, specifically to the Ice Age that will attract the little ones and will please them even more if possible if they have seen the films of the saga of animation ice-age.

Kidspace Children Museum. This is the perfect place to go back to childhood and learn what they teach at school in a fun way. If you can’t go due to lack of time, take a look at their video section, they will surely solve a boring afternoon with ideas of games and activities to do at home.

Battleship USS Iowa Museum. This is a space for boat lovers. Who can resist getting into an authentic World War II battleship?

Madame Tussauds Hollywood wax museum. It is one of the most visited given its location right on Hollywood Boulevard. Perhaps it is one of the most predictable museums on this list, you know what to expect: life-size recreations of famous people, but that does not stop it from being fun, and more to visit with children.

Griffith Observatory. One of the best points to contemplate Los Angeles from above and verify the immensity of the Californian city. The views at sunset are unbeatable, but if you go in the morning you can also access the planetarium and the exhibitions inside.

Amusement parks and other tracks further away from the center

Los Angeles is one of the most loved cities by fans of theme parks, since the variety is wide. This is noticeable, among other things, in the huge queues that form to get on the attractions, so, if you can, avoid going on holidays or weekends.

Disneyland Anaheim. The company’s only theme park whose design was overseen by Walt Disney himself. Since its opening in July 1955, it has received more than 700 million visitors. Some of its attractions have been operating for more than 60 years. A classic.

Universal Studio Hollywood. The park that movie lovers should go to, but especially Universal Pictures movies. Here the Minions, Harry Potter, the most Jurassic dinosaurs, the most spectacular science fiction exhibitions come together… a very fun park for children and also for adults.

Knott’s Berry Farm. A classic amusement park with dizzying roller coasters. It is one of the most historic in Los Angeles and belongs to the same owners as Calico Ghost Town, a ghost town where one of the mythical stops of our beloved Route 66 is located.

Knott’s Soak City. The most suitable for hot summer days, since this is aquatic, so prepare your swimsuit.

Six Flags Magic Mountain. If your children are fans of roller coasters, this park will certainly test their adrenaline. It’s on our to-do list, for when the whole family exceeds the recommended height.

Legoland California Resort. Of all the ones we have visited, one of the ones with the fewest queues. We loved it, and this helped a great deal. Fun rides and Lego pieces everywhere. It’s great for little ones.

Pacific Park from the Santa Monica Pier. A classic amusement park built on one of the most recognizable piers in the world.

Anyway, you see that Los Angeles is a city that gives a lot of itself to go with children, so there is no excuse not to enjoy the experience as a family.
