The best cans of tuna in the supermarket, according to the OCU

The OCU has analyzed 32 cans of light tuna in oil (olive and sunflower) to elaborate a ranking with the best. The general conclusion, they point out, is that the quality is good, although there are differences between products.

They ensure that tuna is still the king of canned fish in Spain. And, despite the fact that inflation has caused a slight decrease in the number of sales, the most consumed canned fish in Spanish homes.

Quantity and quality of tuna cans

When opening the can, they emphasize, “consumers want the tuna to look appetizing: it could be disappointing if it appeared crumbled, with burnt areas or red muscle. This is not the case of the products analyzed in which we have hardly found any defects, except the presence of crumbs in low quantity and only in some references”.

It is also appreciated that the can is well filled with tuna. In general, the proportion between the fish and the liquid in the coating is correct, very close to the minimum required by the regulations.

In addition, they point out, if someone has doubts about the type of tuna and oil used in canning“we can reassure you with the results of the 32 references analyzed”.

Through a PCR test we have verified that the packaged fish corresponds in all cases to one of the species that are authorized for the denomination of light tuna.

The study of the fatty acid profile confirms that the type of oil used coincides in all cases with that indicated on the label (olive or sunflower).

Too much salt in tuna cans

Canned tuna, they explain, is sterilized to destroy harmful germs and increase its shelf life. At the OCU they have verified that its state of conservation is good and does not contain added substances to retain water and increase its weight. Histamine levels are low, which means that the fish had good freshness before it was canned.

They have also analyzed mercury concentration “and we found that in all cases it is well below the established maximum.”

The biggest drawback they found was an excessive presence of salt in these preserveswhich, “in addition to having a negative impact on tasting, is not recommended from a nutritional point of view.” The Spanish Agency for Health and Consumption (AESAN) considers that a food contains a lot of salt if it exceeds 1.25% and the average in these cans is 1.04%.very high.

Despite this, the evaluations in the tasting in terms of aroma, color, flavor and texture are generally good.

What are the best cans of tuna in the supermarket?

Now yes, who leads the ranking of cans of tuna in oil that can be bought in the supermarket.

The best products, detailed from the OCU, present a complete labeling and provide relevant information for the consumer. They do not show defects, they do not go too far in salt, they fill the fish cans well and obtain good evaluations in the tasting: good aromas and flavors of tuna, pleasant and smooth textures, homogeneous colors.

Most of the cans are sold in packs of 3 units. They tend to have apparently similar formats, but there is no uniformity in the tuna content; For this reason, to compare prices, one must look at the price/kg of drained tuna.

In the analysis they have verified that the diversity of prices between the different brands is considerable and, however, the differences in quality are not always parallel.

Focusing research on cans of tuna in olive oil, the prices of the 19 products analyzed range between 11.39 and 42.95 euros/kg drained.
