Surprise visit of US President Joe Biden to kyiv

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, is in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, on a surprise visit that is part of his tour of eastern Europe, as reported by the White House.

It is Biden’s first visit to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, which marks one year on Friday.

Biden has met in Kiev with the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, after the two met for the first time on December 21 during a historic visit by the Ukrainian ruler to Washington, on his first trip abroad since the start war.

“A year later, kyiv is holding on. And Ukraine is standing. Democracy is holding on”Biden has declared.

500 million additional dollars

During his meeting with Zelensky, he announced an additional $500 million in US assistance, as well as assuring Ukraine of US and allied support for the duration of the conflict.

Biden’s visit to kyiv comes at a crucial time in the war. The US president seeks to keep the allies united in their support for Ukraine, given the foreseeable intensification of the conflict, with both sides preparing for spring offensives. Zelensky is pressing allies to speed up delivery of promised weapons systems and is calling on the West to deliver fighter jets to Ukraine, something Biden has so far refused.
